I often make a joke about what would happen if all of our modern electronics suddenly stop working. Do you know what would happen? We would be thrown back all the way to the 1970s.
Some people feel that modern electronics is more of a hindrance than it is a convenience. I was able to decide for myself this week as my incredible four-year-old phone’s battery died. As I began to miss important calls, and meetings with my accountability coach, I started to feel the years melting backward.
Four years is not a long time, yet I started by looking at getting a new phone. Because I was in the middle of a plan change, I was not authorized to purchase a new phone online. I was told to go to a local store.
I went to a store in the mall, and the clerk advised me to go to the repair center for a new battery. The repair center was amazed that the phone’s battery had lasted the four years and they asked me what I wanted to do. It turns out four-year-old phone batteries are not always available, even at the repair center.
The people at the repair center were very kind though. They checked out my account online and helped guide me to a phone that would do what I needed and fit into my limited budget. They made the transition fast and even transferred my apps and data from my old phone to my new one.
I truly appreciated the folks who helped me, and I am in a far better place than I was two days ago. For now, I am comfortably back in the electronic age and ready to move forward into Tomorrowland.
I believe I have finally figured out why we slow down as we grow older.
As we grow older, we gain more knowledge, we know more, and we can think more clearly. We’ve been around the block once are twice, and because of that, we could do much better at tasks if we put our minds to them. It is only fair that we are slowed down a little, just to give the newer generations who are coming up after us a fighting chance.
We need to give the youngsters a chance to practice making decisions. They should experience both succeeding and failure. And, young people need to know how to perform postmortem analysis on a project to see what went right and wrong. They need the ability to help others so it won’t be a strange concept when they grow older.
As we face the knowledge that change is always going to happen. We need to help them realize that the impossible will eventually, at some point, becomes inevitable. We do this because everyone needs to know how to handle the new technology and how it changes the landscape.
You cannot learn to fly until you give up the bicycle and put hands on the controls of the airplane. We need to give the next generations the control of their destinies while helping to make sure they don’t land in a tree. That is our mission in life as the older generation.

My dad was career Army, and I was career Air Force. Every time we moved, it was a significant change to lifestyle.
I retired from military service, and that was a BIG lifestyle Transition.
I became a Supervisor and trainer in a high-tech contract manufacturing plant, working 12-hour shifts. The lifestyle change came 14 years later when the plant closed and went overseas.
To keep the positions, I had earned in a life of transitions, I went back to school. First, to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Business Management, then a Master of Arts in Adult Education and Training.

I have been through more transitions than you can imagine during my 60+ Years. Not only that, I’m willing to bet I’ve probably made every mistake that can be made. And, from that, I’ve learned.

If you spent three years moving between two or three jobs as you try to work out a lifestyle transition, you’ll probably lose about $10,000 worth of earnings that you could’ve made by staying with one company and are better if you can get into the right company to start with. I have many friends who came out of either the military or college and went into something that they thought they wanted to do. To gain the new credentials for the positions, they spent time getting advanced degrees, thousands of hours in some cases going through internships or externships to earn certifications. And after all the time and money spent they learned one escape the inescapable fact, “They hated that job.”
If I you can save a little money along the way that’s a beautiful thing. But that’s not the most important thing I should be doing for you. As silly as it seems, money is a renewable resource. You can always go out somewhere and earn more money. The one thing you cannot gain more of is time. We each have so much time on this earth, and then we’re going to be gone. And the worst part is, we have no clue exactly when our time is going to be up. If I can help you save a little time that’s much more than all the money that I could ever imagine saving you.
Think of what you could do with some extra time to grow in your company, to live the lifestyle you would really like to live, enjoy your family and kids.
I have three wonderful boys. I learned that they don’t stay small forever. They grow, they go to college, then they leave the house. I miss them so does their mom.

There is new and fantastic software, both free and paid, out on the market today. It is much better than what we had a year ago. And probably, it’s nowhere near as good as the new software that’ll be out six months from now. Thus the rush, to have the latest and the best. We do this because we believe having the newest and the best will put us at the forefront and make what we offer and sell both the most original and the best.
Unfortunately, the idea of buying the best makes us the best is a fallacy. In our minds, we know this. And yet, the shininess of the new tool that does everything for you and the slick sales pitch always plays with the mind.
Imagine two competitors for a carpentry job. The first competitor is just out of school and has the newest all-in-one power tool that will do absolutely anything. And yet, the young man has not really built very much by hand.
The second competitor. Is an older gentleman with a dusty toolbox containing a handsaw, a hand drill, a T-square, and a worn hammer. All these tools were given to him by his father. The older man has built cabinets, tables, chairs and other projects every week since he was 13.
You need new cabinets built for your kitchen. Knowing what you know about these two carpenters, who do you give the job to?
You do not need to have the newest of everything. What you need is the working knowledge of and expertise in your craft and trade.
