What Is Worth Investing in And What Is Not Worth Investing in When Trying to Find a Job

Wisely investing your time and resources is essential when searching for a job. Some investments can significantly increase your chances of landing a job, while others may not be worth the effort. Here are some things worth investing in and others that are not worth investing in when looking for a job.

Worth investing in:

  • Networking – Building professional relationships and expanding your network can open up new job opportunities.
  • Education and training – Gaining new skills and knowledge can make you a better candidate seen by potential employers.
  • Professional development – Attending workshops, conferences, and other professional development opportunities can demonstrate your commitment to your field and show that you’re constantly improving.
  • Customized resumes and cover letters – Tailoring your application materials to the specific job can make you stand out from other candidates.

Not worth investing in:

  • Paying for job leads – Many companies that charge for job leads are scams and won’t provide valuable opportunities.
  • Overpriced job search services – Some companies charge exorbitant fees to help you find a job, but they often don’t have any better access to job leads than you do on your own.
  • Certifications that aren’t necessary for the job – While certifications can be valuable, ensure they’re required or highly valued by employers in your field before investing time and money in obtaining them.

Investing in the right areas, you can increase your chances of finding a great job and advancing in your career.

A retired Air Force Master Sergeant, Mike used to lay in bed at night and worry about what would happen if his plant closed or found himself without a job. One day his plant closed. Rather than panic and hysteria (OK, maybe a little) Mike found himself carried away on the adventure of his life. Mike started with the best job he ever had working at Home Depot. He spent 8 years working with job seekers at a local workforce center, helping them to find employment. He then started his own company developing courses, writing books and urging others to follow their own paths into the future. Mike holds a Master of Arts in Adult Education and Training and a Bachelor of Business Management, earned through the University of Phoenix and an AAS degree in Electronics Systems Technology from the Community College of the Air Force. Mike is a member of the Delta Mu Delta Business Honor Society.
